Taxodium distichum

Origin: Eastern United States

Family: Taxodiaceae

English name: Bald cypress

French name: Cyprès chauve

Italian name: Cipresso calvo

Description

This deciduous tree is bald, as the common name suggests. Taxodium is Greek for yew-like, which refers to a family of generally small trees prized for their hard timber. Distichum, means two-ranked and refers to the two rows in which the leaves grow. Cypress is also known as the eternal timber because the heartwood is resistant to decay.
